Hubbard Glacier Bay

Thursday, September 3, 2009 We got up at 6:30 as we were heading into the Hubbard Glacier Bay. This glacier is 6 miles wide, 350-400 feet above the water and 300 feet below the water. It is one of the few advancing glaciers in the world. It was another beautiful day! We arrived about a mile from the glacier face at 8:00 am. Our ship “parked” and we watched as small parts of the glacier “calved” off. As the pieces broke from the glacier and fell into the water you would see them go, the splash and then a loud thundering sound. It was awesome! There was one huge calving that was unbelievable! The captain of the ship, the Alaskan travel guide and the National Park Ranger that were on board said it was the biggest calving they had ever seen! And Bob even caught most of it on our camera with the video running! He was video taping a group of seals when it began! I tried to attach the video, but it is too large! Hope you enjoy the photos! We left the Hubbard Glacier at 10:00 am and headed on toward Seward our final destination.
