Banff National Park

Monday, September 14, 2009

Again we were up at 6:30 am, breakfast at 7:00 and on the bus at 8:00. We headed out of Jasper. Our first stop was at Athabasca Falls. Wow! They were beautiful. We walked around them on some nice paths. Back on the bus to head toward the Columbia Ice Fields where we had reservations for the Snow Bus onto a Ice Field.

We rounded a corner to find the traffic stopped.

We stopped behind about 100 vehicles! Soon the word came down the line that they were blasting ahead and we would have to wait 20 minutes until they had the road cleaned up. Well, about 45 minutes later we heard that they were still cleaning the road! We got out of the bus and visited with other tourists, built an inukshuk (rock figure), panned for gold (didn’t find any) and then after almost 2 hours of waiting we broke out the box lunches and began to eat them on the rocks. Right at that moment, the line of traffic started to move! We all ran for the bus, as if a bear was approaching, and off we went!

This is the Inukshuk that we built while waiting on the highway!

This is the rock that was still left on the road when we went thru.

We arrived at the Columbia Ice Fields over an hour after our reservations! However, we were on one of the first buses headed off to the Ice Field. It was really neat. After 25 minutes on the ice Fieldwe headed back to our bus.

Snocoach that took us up on the Ice Field.

We stopped at Peyto Lake overview. This lake is glacier runoff – a beautiful blue/green color.

Yes! The water really is that color (or colour as they'd say in Canada...)!

Off we went headed for Lake Louise to see the Lodge and walk by the Lake. It is a also the beautiful blue/green color.

From there we drove to Banff and our hotel. We had a prime rib dinner that was delicious! Off to work on the blog and bed!
